Curly parsley

Red Russian Kale. Starting to sprout.
Red Sails Leaf Lettuce. Starting to sprout.
Bloomsdale Spinach. Starting to sprout.
Buttercrunch Lettuce. Starting to sprout.

I fertilized on May 25th with GardenTone organic fertilizer

Also put together a compost pile on May 13th with brown and green grass, some garden soil and compost starter (Ringer Compost Plus). It got a nice turn and watering today, May 26th. Looks exactly the same as when I constructed it and very dry. Guess I should water it more.

Alli and Sidney each planted a container garden. We used these felt bags from Gardener's Supply that my sister gave us. The container seems great so far. They each planted flowers. Sidney planted pumpkin seeds which have sprouted quickly. Alli planted a pumpkin seed and some watermelon seeds. None of them sprouted, so we replanted the last watermelon seed and a few baby pumpkin seeds today. We'll see what happens.

Lastly, Dan finished off stringing the "soaker" hose to the last bed today. This really isn't a soaker hose. It is solid hose perforated every 6 inches with a little hole. It spurts water out like a fountain. Not quite what I was looking for, so I mulched the West and Middle beds with brown grass clippings to keep the water from spraying everywhere. It seems to work well for the most part, but is a bit patchy. I left the East bed without for now until the more of the seedlings come up. We'll see how it all works out in the end. They do make a true soaker hose for a sprinkler system, but I'm not sure it that is the ideal method to water my beds via the underground system. Perhaps each bed needs it's own sprinkler.

2012 represents our first full garden season in Colorado.  I was inspired to create this blog while on a run today. I hope it will serve as journal that I can refer back to year after year, documenting what works and doesn't' work in my garden.

Earlier this spring, we tore out some hated shrubbery in our back yard and created three 4x8 ft raised beds. It is the garden space I have dreamed of for years. Thanks Dan for making my dream come true!
